How to renew your American Visa

The moment has come! Your visa to travel to the United States is about to expire or has already expired and now you need to renew it. Do you know what you should do?

As you may already know, applying to renew a visa can be long and complicated. You have to do a lot of paperwork and comply with a lot of rules, which is very stressful.

Remember that there are approximately 185 categories of visas to travel or emigrate to the US and all have their own specific rules and requirements, so below we are going to show you the 7 basic steps you must follow in order to renew your US visa in a successful.

Steps to renew your American Visa

  1. Check if your visa qualifies for you to renew it
  2. Submit Form DS-160
  3. Check if you qualify for an interview waiver
  4. Pay the visa application fee
  5. Submit supporting documents
  6. Attend the visa interview, if necessary
  7. Wait to receive a consular decision

Next, we’re going to dig a little deeper into each step.

Step 1

Check if your visa qualifies for you to renew it

The first step in the process to renew your US visa is to determine if you qualify to renew it, which although it sounds easy, it’s not so easy to meet all the requirements that are required of you to carry out the renewal.

We advise you to take into consideration and comply with the following aspects:

  • That you have not been denied a visa after obtaining the first one.
  • Your current visa must be valid for more than one year and allow you to enter the United States several times.
  • You must meet all the requirements defined for the type of visa you are applying for.
  • It’s also important that you know that you cannot get your visa in the US, you must do it in your country of origin.

Step 2

Submit Form DS-160

Actually, there is no specific form to renew the non-immigrant visa. You must do the whole process again. After you submit your application, be sure to save the confirmation, as you will need to submit it with the other documents.

Step 3

Check to see if you qualify for an interview waiver

The US Interview Waiver Program (IWP, for its acronym in English) allows individuals who meet certain requirements to renew their visas without attending another interview. But if you don’t qualify, you will have to show up for a second interview. Do you know what are the requirements for you to successfully qualify for the exemption? They are as follows:

  • Your fingerprints have already been taken on your first consular visit.
  • You are going to apply for the same type of visa that you had before.
  • You must have a visa that is still valid or that has expired in the last 12 months.
  • Your visa doesn’t say “Authorization received” or “Exemption granted”.
  • You aren’t a citizen of a country that requires you to pay reciprocity fees.
  • You are not going to apply for a visa that was stolen or lost.

Note: We also recommend that you contact the Embassy or Consulate to find out the specific requirements you need for the exemption according to your country.

Step 4

Pay the visa application fee

Make sure to make the appropriate payments and print the receipt as proof.

Step 5

Submit supporting documents

After you send in the application, you must gather the necessary documents and send them to the United States Embassy located in the country where you live. Most visas require the following documentation:

  • Your passport (it must be valid for at least 6 months after the date you plan to leave North American territory).
  • Expired passports with past visas.
  • 2 new photographs that meet the established requirements (they cannot be the same as the ones you used in your first application).
  • Form DS-160 confirmation page.
  • Receipt showing that you paid the visa fee.
  • Other documents depending on the type of visa you are applying for.

Step 6

Attend the visa interview, if necessary

If you don’t qualify for the IWP, you must attend another interview at the US Embassy where you submitted your application.

The interview is identical to the first one, so don’t stress, you know what to expect!

Step 7

Wait for a consular decision

With all the steps of the US visa renewal process covered, all you have to do now is wait.

The waiting period to renew the visa is relatively short. If you don’t need to go to a second interview, you can receive your visa in just 10 business days.

To find out the exact deadline for when you will get a response, check the website of the U.S. Embassy and Consulate where you submitted your application.
